NOTES FROM A DIARY: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank

From the age of 13 to 15, Anne Frank kept a diary as her life changed from being free to going in hiding. Along with her family and a couple of Jewish acquaintances, they shared living space, food, and the fear of being discovered.
Here are 10 personal thoughts Anne shares with Kitty (her diary) that may resonate with you:

  1. “Paper has more patience than people.”
  2. “I understand my girlfriends better than my own mother. Isn’t that a shame?”
  3. “I’ve learned one thing: you only really get to know a person after a fight. Only then can you judge their true character!”
  4. “The whole time I’ve been here I’ve longed unconsciously and at times consciously— for trust, love and physical affection. This longing may change in intensity, but it’s always there-“
  5. “Then I fall asleep with the strange feeling of wanting to be different than I am or being different than I want to be, or perhaps of behaving differently than I am or want to be.”
  6. “Ordinary people don’t know how much books can mean to someone who’s cooped up.”
  7. “Thinking about the suffering of those you hold dear can reduce you to tears; in fact, you could spend the whole day crying. The most you can do is pray for God to perform a miracle and save at least some of them.”
  8. “All the conflicts about our upbringing, about not pampering children, about the food— about everything, absolutely everything— might have taken a different turn if we’d remained open and on friendly terms instead of always seeing the worst side.”
  9. “People can tell you to shut up, but they can’t keep you from having an opinion. You can’t forbid someone to have an opinion, no matter how young they are!”
  10. “Earning happiness means doing good and working, not speculating and being lazy. Laziness may look inviting, but only work gives you true satisfaction.”

I really like this. Isn’t it incredible that someone so young can write with such wisdom.
